Home Studio Setup

Clients ask us…

Do I have to invest $000s to set up a studio in my home or office?

The short answer is “No.”

We frequently see people over-spend on their first microphones that will capture every nuance and sound fantastic. The problem that often happens is that the recording space is not tamed and the super-expensive microphone will highlight the problems in the space.

Early in your home (of office) studio experience you’re probably better off getting a microphone that is forgiving. One such option is the Audix OM2. You can get them for less than $100. And honestly even cheaper microphones will be a vast improvement over your earbuds or laptop microphone.

To make the environment comfortable and consistent, look to invest in a microphone stand and headphones. The stand will ensure your microphone doesn’t move with you (especially if you talk with your hands) and headphones allow you to listen for any abnormalities in the sound quality before you stop recording. Fixing audio issues in post-production is doable but it’s a lot easier if you’re able to course correct during the recording versus after-the-fact. Check out our recommendations for stands, headphones, and other hardware. We’ve also included some best practices to consider when you’re ready to hit record.
